Definition of Term

Kingdom Animalia
(English) Multicellular, eukaryotic organisms. Animals are heterotrophic, with a wide variety of methods of obtaining nourishment. Animal cells lack cell walls and photosynthetic plastids. Cell vacuoles are small and usually temporary. Fertilization of haploid gametes (egg and sperm cells) results in the formation of a diploid zygote developing into an embryo. The blastula, a hollow ball of cells, is an early stage in this process. This process of blastula formation is unique to animals.
