Definition of Term

courtship bite
(English) A non-feeding bite usually made by a male shark in a female's body to facilitate mating, often leaving mating scars (Ref. 51142, 27106). The bite may act as a releaser for female mating behaviors and may stimulate ovulation and other physiological changes (Ref. 51143). Biting in some species may also be an expression of reproductive hierarchy (Ref. 51113).
