Definition of Term

food additives
(English) Anything added to food is not necessarily a food additive. A food additive is a substance or mixture of substances, other than a basic food stuff, which is present in food as a result of any aspect of production, processing, storage, or pcking. The term does not include chance contaminants. Food additives can be functionally classified as: Intentional food additives - nutritive, freshness, maintenance, sensory, processing aids. Incidental food additives - these have no purposeful function in food. This class includes all materials which would not usually become a part of food if man could completely control food production.
