Definition of Term

mating scars
(English) In elasmobranchs, these are wounds left by a 'courtship bite'. Lesions may be fresh and open, with or without bleeding, or healed marks typified by disrupted denticle patterns that may persist for some time. Scars are usually present on the pectoral fins and often on the trunk around the pelvic fins of females. Scars may occur anywhere on body but are rare around the head of most species (Ref. 51142, 27106). Similar to 'scarring (Ref. 51113). (See also: courtship bite)
