Definition of Term

saltation
(English) An irreversible and inherited change in a cell or organism, which may be due to mutation or to some other mechanism; used especially of bacteria and fungi. The direct transformation of one organismic form into another when it occurs according to some evolutionary theories by major evolutionary steps. (See also: saltatory)
