Clusters or single vase-like tubes: 5 - 15 cm high. Bright red to orange externally, and internally. Very spiky surface. Compressible but resilient to the touch (Ref. 415).
In Bocas Del Torro, on deeper edges of reefs: 14 to 18 m deep covered by mud. Elsewhere found on reefs under 10 m deep (Ref. 415). Also in mangrove ponds (Ref. 86789).

Members of the class Demospongiae are hermaphroditic. Life cycle: The zygote develops into parenchymella larva (free-swimming) before settling down on a substrate where it grows into a young sponge.
