comments Population in northern Australia severely depleted by over hunting between 1950-1970 (Ref. 77100). The species was protected in the Northern Territory in 1971 with the Crocodile Management Program for the Northern Territory being the first formal program for the sustainable use of wildlife (Ref. 77106). Trade is governed by CITES Appendix II for ranching purposes, notably for the production of skins and meat for sale on national and international markets (Ref. 77106). In 1994, as a result of the successful management of the species, CITES listing was changed to Appendix II unqualified, allowing trial harvests of adult crocodiles.
