Family:  Muricidae (purpuras, murex and rock shells)
Max. size:  14 cm SHL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthic; marine; depth range 24 - 53 m
Distribution:  Indo-West Pacific: from southeast Africa to Micronesia and Melanesia; north to Japan and south to New Caledonia and Fiji Islands.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  This common species is frequently collected for food and shellcraft. In some localities, populations have been greatly reduced because of over collecting (Ref. 349). Also found in shallow subtidal waters (Ref. 349).
