Family:  Cardiidae (cockles)
Max. size:  8 cm SHH (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthic; marine; depth range 0 - 20 m
Distribution:  Indo-Pacific: from Mauritius Island, but probably not on the East African coast, to eastern Polynesia; north to Japan and south to northern Queensland and New Caledonia.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Mainly used as an ornamental shell (Ref. 348). Found in intertidal reef flats wherein it is attached to its substrate via its small byssus (Ref. 799). It prefers littoral and sublittoral areas, with sand and coral rubble substrates, predominantly in exposed but sometimes protected environments. It is sometimes associated with seagrass (Ref. 104607). The flattish posterior surface of shell lying horizontally just beneath the surface. Sometimes in dense colonies (Ref. 348).
