Definition of Term

mesopelagic
(English) Pertaining to the region of the oceanic zone from 200 m to 1100 (or 150-2000) m (sources differ); a middle layer of the ocean between the epipelagic and bathypelagic layers. Living or feeding at midwater at depths between 200 m and 1,000 m. Generally characterized by dim light and steep temperature gradients. (See also: pelagic, epipelagic, bathypelagic)
