At metamorphosis, it develops a foot which it uses to attach itself on the sand with a byssus which helps maintain its position from the moving sand caused by waves. The length of a byssus can range from 45 to 92 mm or as much as five times the length of the clam. As the clam increases in size the byssus disappears. The clam's increasing weight and burrowing power then helps to maintain it on the beach.
