Abrolhos Shelf encompasses the largest and richest coral reef formation in the South Atlantic Ocean. Several studies have recorded and described the area: having the highest coral species diversity in the South Atlantic Ocean; more than 200 fish species associated with its reefs; exceptionally important for the regional economy, supporting fishing and tourism activities; the health of the Abrolhos shallow reefs is, however, being negatively affected by overishing, coral diseases and overall water quality degradation and microbialization (Ref. 126840).
