Description Rises in the eastern Tibethan Plateau, passes through China, Myanmar, Laos PDR, Thailand and Kampuchea before it drains into the South China Sea (Ref. 6318). The river has been divided into three portions: The Upper Mekong from the watershed southward to north of Chiangsae, Thailand; the Middle Mekong, from Chiangsaen to the Khone Falls (LeePee) of southern Laos PDR; and from then the Lower Mekong until reaching the delta. The water level of the Mekong changes seasonally by 10-20 m, being highest during the summer in northern areas and lowest in April in souther areas.
