I am interested in understanding patterns of marine biodiversity at large spatial scales, and in particular in how we can combine data from many sources to gain a better picture of the distribution of marine species at the scale of entire oceans. There are two main areas where I use the kind of data found in SeaLifeBase. First, I am interested in how the biological traits of species (for instance, their body size or mode of reproduction) influences their spatial distribution. But I am also interested in addressing more general questions, for example, how much do we know about marine species? Is it true that we know less about marine species than about terrestrial species, and if so, where are the major gaps in our knowledge? |
