Shawn received his B.Sc. (Environmental Sciences) from Simon Fraser University in 2000 and started to work for the Sea Around Us Project. Fisheries related issues have been an interest to him since working as a fisheries technician in the BC salmon fisheries, having collectively spent over a year at sea in the coastal waters of BC. Since becoming a member of the Sea Around Us Project, Shawn has been involved in estimating global fisheries catches by improving countries’ catch estimates. This incorporates catches not reported in the FAO catch statistics database thereby improving the global estimates of fisheries catches. He has also been involved in the modeling of toxins (dioxin and mercury) in aquatic ecosystems using Ecopath with Ecosim. This software allows the simulation of the global dispersion of toxins and the resulting impacts on marine ecosystems. From the results, one can also estimate the human dietary exposure of toxins from the consumption of seafood, an important food safety concern. He is the collaborator of Pollutants Database. |
