Massive amorphous to lobate. Color: black to purplish gray externally, tan internally. Very smooth skin that wrinkles when lifted out of the water. Consistency compressible and dense, easily torn (Ref. 415).
Rare species; exclusive of reef habitats, under 5 m deep (Ref. 415).

Members of the class Demospongiae are hermaphroditic. Life cycle: The zygote develops into parenchymella larva (free-swimming) before settling down on a substrate where it grows into a young sponge.
