Members of this family united by anterior-posterior compression, so bodies appear relatively squat
or flat. Body gelatinous to fragile; fins small to moderate size. Eyes laterally oriented. Single row of small suckers and two rows of short cirri (0.4 to 2.5 times largest sucker diameter), extending to arm tips. Enlarged suckers present in mature males of several genera. Shells simple U-or W-shaped structures; significantly expanded lateral wings absent. Secondary web absent (Ref. 96968).
