Indo-Pacific: Red Sea to Melanesia, north to Japan and south to Australia.

Formation: hemispherical to flat. Valley: 20 to 25 mm wide, in average; irregularly meandroid, straight in flat colonies. Walls: moderately thick, fleshy, with a grove along the top. Color: widely ranging from red to gray and green, with valleys and walls often of contrasting color. Colonies in Red Sea are commonly cream colored (Ref. 848).

Hermaphroditic (Ref. 113712). Mature gametes are shed into the coelenteron and spawned through the mouth. Life cycle: The zygote develops into a planktonic planula larva. Metamorphosis begins with early morphogenesis of tentacles, septa and pharynx before larval settlement on the aboral end (Ref. 833).
