These are large and heavy-bodied file snakes, with loose flabby skin and conical scales. Sexual dimorphism is extreme: females grow larger than males. Feeds exclusively on fishes, including carrion; feeding frequency low but with unusually high digestive frequency. Exhibits seasonal reproduction with average fecundity, 17 young per litter, correlated with female body size (Ref. 2412).
