Northern Pacific, Northern Atlantic and the Arctic: Vulpes lagopus lagopus: Russia, Kamchatka, Alaska, Labrador, St Matthew, St Lawrence Is, Diomede Island, Greenland, Washington, Canada, North Pole, Bering Sea, Kuril Is; Vulpes lagopus fuliginosus: Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Svalbard, northern Scandinavia; Vulpes lagopus beringensis: Russia; Vulpes lagopus pribilofensis: St Paul Is and St George Island in the Pribilofs (Ref. 1522).

Found in the arctic tundra. Scavenge polar bears, ringed seal pups, colonial sea birds and their eggs during the summer, during winter and spring marine mammal carrion is their most important food; they also consume fish, and marine invertebrates (Ref. 1522).
