This clam is overexploited in Laguna Lake, together with other shellfish species, used as feeds to the duck industry (Ref. 81515). They are good biological indicators of water quality; since they are long-lived and relatively immobile, they accumulate contaminants found in water and sediments for scientific study (Ref. 81516). It can rapidly recycle nutrients important to phytoplankton growth and in rivers where it is abundant, it promotes a higher nutrient excretion rate than sediment flux rate (Ref. 81252). Depth range is based on occurrence in James River in US (Ref. 101350).
