Massive-amorphous to globular. Black externally, tan internally. Surface with conules 0.2 - 0.3 cm high, 0.1 - 0.4 cm apart. Membrane-bearing oscules: 0.1 - 0.5 cm wide; scattered or on mound-like elevations. Compressible, tough to tear. Overgrown by other organisms (Ref. 415).

Members of the class Demospongiae are hermaphroditic. Life cycle: The zygote develops into parenchymella larva (free-swimming) before settling down on a substrate where it grows into a young sponge.
