Western Atlantic. Introduced to French Polynesia, New Caledonia, and the Mediterranean Sea.

Maximum standard length: 22 cm (Ref. 356). Inhabits bottom mud or peat, often with sand, clay or broken shells. Adults in marine environment. Juveniles in estuarine and marine environment (Ref. 8).
