Massive, roundish, occasionally lobate up to 30 cm wide. Two distinct color: bright orange, and reddish to walnut-brown externally, lighter orange or tan internally. The surface is smooth. There are 3 intergrading kinds of oscules: 1. meandering invaginations; 0.1 - 0.3 cm wide; up to 5 cm long; 2. circular oscule, 0.2 - 0.7 cm in diameter; 3. smaller, circular to elongate, 0.1 - 0.2 cm wide, flush (Ref. 415).

Members of the class Demospongiae are hermaphroditic. Life cycle: The zygote develops into parenchymella larva (free-swimming) before settling down on a substrate where it grows into a young sponge.
