Branches erect and flexible with tips generally tapering and dichotomous, generally attached on a central column and fused to each other at several points. Surface may be completely smooth or finely or coarsely conulose, with developing lobes and processes. Star-shaped oscules irregularly distributed. Color is purple, dark brown, almost black, light brown, purple brown, pink or beige in alcohol; unknown when alive.

Members of the class Demospongiae are hermaphroditic. Life cycle: The zygote develops into parenchymella larva (free-swimming) before settling down on a substrate where it grows into a young sponge.
