Maximum depth from Ref. 83942. Inhabits shallow reef rock and reef crests (Ref. 415). This species is restricted to shallow water less than 3 meters and more prevalent in a high energy environment (Ref. 86574). Dwells in beach rock, coral reefs, seagrass beds, other hard rock substrates, and irregular bottoms. Recorded from superficial seawater temperatures of 20.8-29°C. Predominantly herbivorous with reports of facultative omnivory leaning towards herbivory (Ref. 128651).

Life cycle and mating behavior Könsmognad | Reproduktion | Lek | Eggs | Fecundity | Larvae

Members of the class Echinoidea are gonochoric. Fertilization is external. Brooding is common, eggs are held either on the peristome, around the periproct or deep into the concavities on the petaloids. Life cycle: Embryos develop into planktotrophic larvae (echinoplateus) and live for several months before they sink to the bottom using their tube feet to adhere on the ground where they metamorphose into young urchins.
