Short description Morphology

Maximum Width: 0.5 cm. Height: 0.5 - 1 cm. Massive sponge, with oscular tubes. Brown to black in color externally, tan internally. Conulose surface, some tubercle-like projections: few mm high, 0.2 - 0.3 cm wide. Compressible.

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Size of ocular tubes is 0.5cm in width, and 1cm in height (Ref. 415). Maximum size refers to that of colony which is also 14cm in height (Ref. 82103). Found in lagoons (Ref. 82103) and is common to rare on mangrove roots (Ref. 415). Hosts alpheid shrimps on its canals (Ref. 83410).

Members of the class Demospongiae are hermaphroditic. Life cycle: The zygote develops into parenchymella larva (free-swimming) before settling down on a substrate where it grows into a young sponge.
