Indo-West Pacific: Aonyx cinerea concolor: northern India, Yunnan, and Myanmar; Aonyx cinerea cinerea: Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Kepulauan Riau, Kepulauan Lingga, Sumatra, Java, Karimunjawa, Borneo, Pulau Laut, Palawan; Aonyx cinerea nirnai: southern India (Ref. 1522).

Inhabits mangroves, rivers and floodplains. Nocturnal and crepuscular; found singly or in groups of up to fifteen individuals. Feeds on a variety of prey including crabs, fish, snakes, and insects; although mudflat crabs is a year-round staple in their diet (Ref. 79550).
